TABLE TENNIS AT WESLEY
1961
Table Tennis was revived at Wesley College after a long period of oblivion. Demonstration and Introductory lecture by Table Tennis Champion of Sri Lanka, Mr. Schoorman. The Team led by A.C Wijeyathilake (Senior) and EverardSchoorman. (Junior) and M.I.C – Mr. N. A. B Fernando.
The Table Tennis Team represented College at the Inter – School Table Tennis Tournament;
Junior Team – Won 5 out of the 7 matches defeating Ananda College, St. Josephs College, Dharmasoka College, Zahira College and Hindu College whilst losing to Green Lands and St. Peters College. The Senior Team
Senior Team – Won 4 out of the 10 Matches, Defeating Christian College, Hindu College, Nalanda College and St. Mathews. Losing to Zahira College, Ananda College, St. Josephs, Thurstan College, Dharmasoka and Prince of Wales College.
1981 – 1982
Wesley College were able to produce many exemplary players who contributed to the match winning games of this period.
1986
No Inter – School Tournaments were held therefore with the Support of T.I.C Mrs. R. V.Fernando, Friendly Matches were conducted. Four Matches were played, Wesley emerged victorious in 2 and were defeated in 2 matches.
1987 – 1990
A pauseto the game of Tables Tennis was observed
1991
The Re-appointment of Mrs. Ranjini Fernando as Coach and T.I.C witnessed the revival of the sport, qualifying Wesley College to compete in the Annual Inter-School Tables Tennis Tournament. P. Saifudeen and D. Kurukalasooriya were notable players in the Senior category while the Senadheera Brothers in the Junior Category.
The Junior Team emerged as Group Winners in the “D Division” Tournament
1992
The Junior Team were Semi – Finalists in the “D Division” Category of the Annual Inter – School Table Tennis Tournament
P. Saifudeen played was a notable player in the Men’s Doubles at the Senior Nationals
1994
Venkatigiri Raman and his team representing College performed exceptionally at the Inter – School Table Tennis Tournament defeating Devananda College, Dharmasoka College, Royal College and Trinity College (Semi Finals). Wesley College lost to Kingswood College Kandy in the Finals crowning the team as Runners Up.
2000
The Wesley team led by Dinesh Duminda were able to ensure the Under 12 and Under 16 Teams emerged victorious in numerous matches and were awarded the Runners Up of the Inter – School Table Tennis Tournament in the Division D. Both Teams were promoted to Division C.
2001
Under 18 Team were the Runners Up of the Inter – School Table Tennis Tournament, Division D. The Team was Promoted to Division C.
2002
GayanTennaoon (Captain) and Team were able to secure the below in the All – Island Table Tennis Tournament,
Under 18 – “A” and “B” Teams reached the Semi Finals – C Division.
Under 16 – “A” Team Emerged Champions in D Division
Under 16 – “C” Team Runners Up in Division E
2003
Led by G. SamithKumarage, The Under – 19 Team were Crowned the Champions of the D Division in the Western Province All Island Table Tennis Tournament.
2004
The Under 12 and Under 16 Teams were able to reach the Semi Finals in the All – Island Table Tennis Tournament
KabeerSharker and R. Eswaran were ranked in the Sri Lanka Table Tennis Junior National Pool
2005
R. Eswaran was Ranked 19th by the Sri Lanka Table Tennis Association in the Under – 19 Boys Category
R. Eswaran, B. Janorthkrishnan, M. F Tahir, S. Pradeep, T. F. Z Buhari attended the Inter – Religious Peace Tournament in South Korea along with Mr. J. A. W Bandara (M.I.C) Mr. J. Samaraweera (Coach – Senior) and Mr. AnuraGunapala (Coach – Junior)
2006
M. F Tahir was ranked within the top 16 in the Under – 19 Category and 18th in the Under – 17 Category by the Table Tennis Association of Sri Lanka.
Under 16 team reached the Semi – Finals in the All Island Competitions, B Division.
2007
The Below Rankings were observed in the All Island Inter – School Table Tennis Tournament,
Under 10 – Finalists in the C Division
Under 18 – Semi Finalists in the C Division
Under 16 – Semi Finalists in the B Division
LithminaMahanama emerged Champion Player, Ranked 1 in the Tournament
2008
The Team took part in the All Island Table Tennis Tournament and secure,
Under 12 – Quarter Finalists in the C Division
Under 19 – Semi Finalists in the C Division
T.F.Z Buhari, KapilaChaturanga, SithiraMahanama and SaleemArfath participated in the Inter – Religious Peace Tournament (I.P.S.F) in South Korea in July 2008.
2010
Lithmina Mahanama was crowned champion and ranked No. 01 in Sri Lanka, Under 10 Category.
2011
Under 12 emerged Champions in the B Division category and LithminaMahanama was Champion in the U – 12 and U – 15 Age Group at the All Island Inter School Table Tennis Tournament.
2012
SithiraMahanama took part in the Inter – Religious Peace Sports Festival in South Korea and was able to attain a Gold Medal.
Lithmina Mahanama was selected to represent Sri Lanka in an International Table Tennis Tournament held in Vienna, Austria.
2013
The Team was able to secure the below at the Inter – School Table Tennis Tournament,
Under 14 – Champions in the B Division
Under 16 – Champions in the B Division and Promoted to Division A
The Under 15 team was placed 2nd at the National School Games, Western Province organized by the Ministry of Education.
2015
15 Year Old, Mast. Kithmin Mahanama was titled champion of the Under 15 Category at the Rating Tournament and was selected to participate in a Table Tennis Tornament in Thailand.
2016
The Under 18 Team were declared Champions – All Island Inter School Tournament, and was Promoted to “A Division” for the first time
Ihsaan Faleel was the Under 08 Champion in the Inter School Wesletern Province Open Tournament.
Lithmina Mahanama was ranked among the first four ranked players, all island in the under 15 age group category
2017
Former Sri Lankan Champion Mr. Jothipala Samraweera appointed as Coach.
The Under 19 Team reached the Quarter Finals in the All Island Inter Schools Tournament
2018
The Under 19 Team reached the Quarter Finals in the All Island Inter Schools Tournament
The Departure of 2 Senior Players witnessed Wesley relegated to “B Division”
2019
The Under 19 Team were placed 3rd in the All Island Tournament, “B Division” category.
The Under 12 “B” Team participated in the Inter School All Island Tournament and was placed 3rd in the “D Division” and subsequently was Promoted to “C Division”
Mast. Ihsaan Faleel was awarded Joint Champions in the Under 10 Category of the Western Province Doubles Tournament.
2022
Western Province Ranking Table Tennis Championship 2022 held on 2nd & 3rd July at St. Thomas College Ishann Faleel won under 13 Championship
